Bill Gates speaks on the iPad

The folks over at Bnet sat down with big Bill and asked what he thought of Apple's latest creation. He didn't down right diss' the iPad but similarly didn't sing it's praises.

“You know, I’m a big believer in touch and digital reading, but I still think that some mixture of voice, the pen and a real keyboard - in other words a netbook - will be the mainstream on that,” he said. “So, it’s not like I sit there and feel the same way I did with iPhone where I say, ‘Oh my God, Microsoft didn’t aim high enough.’  It’s a nice reader, but there’s nothing on the iPad I look at and say, ‘Oh, I wish Microsoft had done it.’”

So the mention of a 'pen', looks like he's still a fan of those stylus' (styli?). To be fair to Bill he does know a thing or two about tablet PCs - he's been trying to sell them for years!

Hutchison Austria to sell iPad?

Speculation is rising that Hutchison Austria (Commonly referred to as the 3 Network) will sell the iPad subsidized at a cost of 333euro when a customer signs up to a 2 year data plan at 29.90euro per month, data is capped at 5GB.

If that is indeed true then we should expect to see other European carries follow suit. Similar deals are already available in the region for customers purchasing netbooks.

Steve Jobs in NYC to demo iPad to Execs

Rumors are circulating that Apple CEO Steve Jobs apparently is in New York City to meet with executives at The New York Times,  Time Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. It seems the purpose of these visits is to discuss iPad as publishing platform for newspapers and magazines (which would make sense).

Silicon Alley Insider reports:

We're reliably informed that Jobs showed up for an iPad show and tell in the Times newsroom. The meeting was strictly off the record, though a person present indicated Jobs is preparing to gear up the iPad for magazines and newspapers, having put books first on his list of priorities.

Bring on the iNewspapers and iMagazines stores we say!!

Textbook Publishers Sign deal to get content on iPad

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that textbook publishers have signed a deal with with Apple to bring their content to the iPad. The books will use Scrollmotion technology which has already developed similar content for the iPhone. The iPad faces tough competition from other devices such as the Amazon Kindle and the various forms of Netbook available on the market today. It's interesting that Apple did not announce any of these plans during the iPad launch although the use of textbook on the device was widely rumored prior to the event.

On a personal note I want to see magazine and newspaper publishers sign a similar deal.

UK to get iPad early

A quick look on Apple's UK site reveals that "Wi-Fi models shipping in late March. 3G models shipping in April." That's despite what Steve Jobs said last week indicating that the 3G iPad wouldn't debut until June or July.

Also, some rumors of late have been flying about a potential heavily subsidized 3G version in the UK similar to how a lot of netbooks are sold, i.e. if you are willing to signup for a 24month data plan you get the device itself for 'free' or at a very low cost. I must admit that kind of offer would certainly appeal to some who can't afford to stump up the $499+ price tag.

iPad makes an appearance at the Grammy Awards

Last night Stephen Colbert finally got his iPad, while announcing the winner for 'song of the year' he fumbled around in his pockets for a while before producing the magical device. He also teased hip-hop royalty Jay-Z asking him 'Jay-Z did you not get one of these in your gift bag?' Check out the video.

Quick Analysis: Does the iPad cost too much?

Darren Beckett has produced this nifty little 'info graphic' comparing the iPad to some of it's main rivals. Yes the iPad is the most expensive but you do get more features. It really does highlight the limitations of the competition.

iPad will be allowed to make phone calls

The LA Times is reporting that outgoing phone calls can be made via VOIP services like Skype.

An Apple spokes person "We revised our Program License Agreement in conjunction with our updated Software Development Kit for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Apps,"

Obviously a 3G version of the iPad will be required for this to work but we think it's cool that Apple are allowing VOIP calls.

iPad: WIFI & 3G Versions look slightly different

Just a quick note; the 3G version iPad has black plastic running along the top of the device which can be seen from the front (See image above). This is to allow the 3G signals to transmit more freely.
